Once enrolled, you can expect to spend several months to a year in training depending on how much time you can commit to your studies at once (real estate training can be done through correspondence at your own pace if you need to work at the same time). You will then begin your education in the basics of real estate by learning what Realtors do and how to manage your business finances when you set your self up as a sales representative. Because most Realtors are self employed and work on commission, budgeting is a crucial part of the learning process.
After you've covered the basics, your instructors will move on to the minutiae of how real estate changes hands and what your part will be in the real estate transfer process. You'll learn about real estate law and how to stay within it, how to appraise a home, how to manage property, and how mortgages and real estate investing works. You'll then be asked to specialize in one of two disciplines: residential real estate or commercial real estate.
Once your course work is finished you still don't have permission to go selling listings until you pass the examination set out by your local real estate board and obtain your license. The exam will cover everything you've learned during your coursework, test your attitude and budgeting skill, and weed out unsuitable from the ranks of Realtors. Passing the test will usually not only grant you a real estate license, but also admit you into the ranks of the real estate board or association.
